The 7 Areas of Learning and Development
In the early years, children's learning and development is guided by the 7 Areas of Learning. These areas form the basis of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, which is followed by nurseries, pre-schools, and childminders across England.

The 7 Areas are designed to support children's growth in every part of their development — from building strong communication skills to encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and understanding the world around them.

They are split into Prime Areas, which are the essential foundations for all future learning, and Specific Areas, which help to strengthen and build on those foundations as children grow.

Each child is unique, and the areas often overlap naturally through play, exploration, and everyday experiences.
The Prime Areas
1. Communication and Language
Supporting children to develop their speaking, listening, and understanding skills — vital for learning and building relationships.
2. Physical Development
Helping children gain control over their bodies, build strength and coordination, and learn about how to stay healthy.
3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Encouraging children to understand their own feelings, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and resilience.
The Specific Areas
4. Literacy
Introducing early reading and writing skills through stories, songs, mark-making, and sharing books.
5. Mathematics
Helping children explore numbers, patterns, shapes, and measurements through play and everyday experiences.
6. Understanding the World
Supporting children's curiosity about people, places, technology, and the natural world.
7. Expressive Arts and Design
Encouraging creativity through art, music, dance, role-play, and imaginative activities.
